Volunteering

Volunteer Roles Available

There are a wide range of voluntary roles available at Overgate Hospice. We have a dedicated Volunteer Coordinator who can give you all the help and advice you need.

Volunteers are a vital part of the organisation.  They provide an extra level of quality and care for patients, carers and their families and friends.

The value placed upon our volunteers is immeasurable.  On average volunteers give over 750 hours of service each week to Overgate.  Some volunteers have a regular commitment and others help on an occasional basis.

All our volunteers, apart from those working in our charity shops or in our Friends Groups, are required to undertake a Disclosure & Barring Services enhanced disclosure (DBS). All have to provide two references and attend a general induction training session at Overgate Hospice before they can begin volunteering to ensure safety and suitability for each volunteer role.

Please note that the minimum age for volunteering at the Hospice is 16 years of age.

This section provides basic information about the voluntary work at Overgate Hospice that is currently available.

For more information please call our Volunteer Coordinator on 01422 387145.

Our Charity Shops

We currently have twelve shops throughout Calderdale - located in:

Hebden Bridge - a charity shop and a furniture/vintage shop

King Cross

Ovenden

Sowerby Bridge

Elland

Todmorden

Halifax

West Vale

Brighouse - a charity shop, a designer wear shop and a furniture shop

We need volunteers to help in all of our shops. Activities include sorting donated bags of items, pricing items, displaying and selling. You will also be seen as an ambassador for the charity as for a lot of our supporters, their local Overgate Charity Shop is their only connection to the Hospice.

For more information on our shops please click here.

Furniture Shop Van Driver/Drivers Mate

Our busy furniture shops are located in Brighouse and Hebden Bridge and rely heavily on volunteer support to collect items of donated furniture from houses and deliver them back to the shop.

We are looking to increase the number of people to come on board as a driver/drivers mate to support the shops.

This role is very physical - involving lifting and carrying at times awkward and heavy items in and out of the shop, van(s) and houses. You must have a full driving licence and we will undertake/obtain an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service certificate for this role.

If you would like further information about the role please contact the Manager at the relevant shop:

Brighouse - 01484 718346

Hebden Bridge - 01422 845731

Day Hospice Drivers

We require careful drivers to bring our patients to Day Hospice (using their own cars) and take them home again. Mileage/petrol costs will be reimbursed.

Friends Groups

Our 'Friends of Overgate' groups meet in Brighouse, Elland, Sowerby Bridge & Todmorden on a regular basis.

They are a vital part of our fundraising and raise the profile of the work that we do within their own local communities.  They organise events in their own areas, as well as supporting our main events.

All groups would welcome new volunteers. If you would like further information about a group local to you please do get in touch.

Fundraising Events

We really need to increase the number of Volunteers who can help us out in the community or at events that we organise.

These volunteering roles may involve representing the hospice in the community doing flag days, helping on stalls at our events, helping with calendar and merchandise distribution, Christmas card sales, helping as a marshal or registration person at events - the list is endless !

Please do get in touch as we would love to hear from you.

Housekeeping Team

We have several volunteering vacancies to support our housekeeping team. Duties include helping with light cleaning duties, restocking kitchen areas, operating the dishwasher, help keep plants/flower displays healthy, help with laundry and any other tasks to support the staff as required.

The vacancies are on a Monday, Tuesday, Friday or Saturday morning (approx 9.30am/12.30pm)

Kitchen Assistant

Volunteers are needed to help with basic kitchen work/washing up within the kitchen at the Hospice in Elland.  You will be required to attend an in-house basic food hygiene session in order to carry out this role.

We currently have a vacancies on a Thursday tea time, Friday morning, Saturday tea time and Sunday morning.

Receptionists

Receptionists work on a rota (one shift per week) during weekdays, weekends or evenings. Good interpersonal and telephone skills are essential.  The reception desk is the first port of call for most people visiting the hospice; therefore a warm and welcoming manner is required.  Rota times are: 9.00 am – 1.00 pm, 1.00 pm to 5.00 pm, 5.00 pm to 7.00 pm seven days a week.

Every year, during the first week in June, we celebrate national "Volunteers Week".

It is a wonderful opportunity for us to recognise the fantastic work and support provided by our team of over 550 regular volunteers.

These are people from within our community who support us in our charity shops, in the various departments within the Hospice, members of our Friends of Overgate Groups, our Choir, at our many fundraising events - the list is endless.

During this week we will be sharing with you just why our volunteers get involved and what they personally get out of volunteering.
