Overgate Hospice has been at the heart of the Calderdale community since 1981, providing specialist support to local people living with a life-limiting illness, supporting a population of over 210,000 people. 

For over 40 years, the team at Overgate have continued to provide the highest standard of care to patients and their families, however, the facilities at the Hospice have gradually become outdated and are no longer fit to meet the needs of our patients.

As the wider healthcare landscape is evolving, so too is hospice care. The growing population means we are caring for more people with a wider variety of complex, terminal illnesses. Our current Inpatient Unit only has 12 beds with the majority of these being in shared rooms, often restricting admissions. Bathroom facilities are cramped and limited, impacting the privacy and dignity our patients deserve.
Our current Day Hospice facilities were updated in 2011 and met the needs of the local community at that time. Since then, our Day Hospice services have adapted and grown to provide additional care and support from a much earlier stage in a patient’s illness. A new drop-in clinic was launched in 2019 to provide accessible care for people who have received a terminal diagnosis. This service saw a huge uptake, with a 40% increase in attendances to Day Hospice. However, as patient numbers increase, the size of the building is limiting our ability to sustain this extra capacity. As a result, a series of Overgate HUBs were established in 2022, providing advice, care and support to people from locations within the wider Calderdale community. 
 
It is now essential we modernise the Hospice’s facilities to ensure that we can support more people to live their final years, months, weeks and days to the fullest. In order to do this we need to carry out a large-scale redevelopment of the Hospice site; building a new purpose-built 16 bed Inpatient Unit, and significantly expanding and upgrading our Day Hospice facilities.
