Katie’s Story
My brother Patrick was always the life and soul of the party, known and loved by everyone in Elland. When he passed away, over 200 people came to his funeral. Patrick’s illness took its toll slowly at first; but, as Christmas approached, it became clear that he would need to spend his final days at the Hospice.
Christmas has always been incredibly special for us. We’re a big, close-knit group, and we were heartbroken at the thought of Patrick being away from us - but Overgate made sure that didn’t happen. Our sister Nuala and I had Christmas dinner with Patrick. Staff set up a table in the respite room and served us a beautiful three-course dinner. Patrick wore his Christmas jumper, and we watched Wallace and Gromit, smiling and laughing together. Later, we sang hymns together, like we always used to.
That Christmas was a gift. A memory we will carry forever.
Now, due to my own illness, I’ve begun receiving support from Overgate too. From the very first visit, I have felt welcome. And, because of the care I saw Patrick receive, I’m no longer afraid of what the future holds. I know that when my time comes, I’ll be in the best possible place - surrounded by kindness, dignity, and love.
