Alison's Story

Alison Harwood talks about Overgate Hospice
I joined the Hospice team in May of this year as Chief Executive and bring with me a passion for quality and compassionate care for anyone approaching end of life. This is based on 30 years as a nurse leader, caring for people with cancer and long-term respiratory conditions, and as an educator ensuring that future generations have the skills and drive needed to work in health and social care.

Prior to joining Overgate I spent six years at Wakefield Hospice as the Director of Clinical Services. This saw me leading all patient services including developing end of life dementia services and specialist education and training, alongside the legislation and accountability of service delivery, CQC monitoring and compliance for the organisation.

People matter to me and I want Overgate to remain at the forefront of providing care to anyone with a life-limiting condition; through facilities that match the extra mile mentality of care both in the inpatient setting and respite, but also through outreach into the community to support people closer to home, caring for families and loved ones at one of the most difficult times of their life.

Specialist palliative care needs highly skilled people whether they are providing hands-on care, keeping the hospice clean, answering the phone to a distressed family, or helping raise vital funds to keep us going! Having the support of the community, staff and volunteers is vital to help us continue to develop and widen our impact and reach. It is never easy to maintain the kind of reputation that Overgate has but as Florence Nightingale said, “for the sick it is important to have the best” and that is what Overgate will always strive to give.

It is a true privilege to head up such a well-respected organisation and to be a core part of supporting high quality end of life and specialist palliative care across Calderdale. I feel very honoured to have the opportunity to lead the Hospice into its next 40 years!
