Carol's Story

Carol and her part in the Overgate Choir

I joined the Overgate Hospice Choir in 2008 and have been Chairman for five years. Previously I had attended one of their concerts which I thoroughly enjoyed and because I love singing and had been in a choir previously, and also at school, I decided I would like to become a member. Being a part of any choir is wonderful, but I particularly liked the idea of being part of a mixed choir that supported such a fantastic local cause. In 2015 I became Secretary and when the Chairman stepped down a year later, I was invited to take over the role.

The choir is currently made up of 65 members and I feel privileged to be part of such a wonderful group of people. We perform four main concerts a year, with smaller performances in between, and get together each Wednesday to rehearse.

I have so many fond memories of my time in the choir. A few years ago we sang at the annual Light Up a Life service at the Hospice and I can still picture the beauty of the scene as we sang at dusk in front of hundreds of people, each with their light and each there to remember someone special. There is also a feeling of what I can only describe as elation when we perform certain pieces, such as the Hallelujah Chorus in Handel’s Messiah, that cannot be matched by much else.

As the Hospice celebrates its 40th anniversary we celebrate our 30th anniversary which is so poignant to us. Due to the pandemic we have only recently been able to return to performing but we hope that our Christmas concert will serve as a fitting celebration for both magnificent milestones.
