My first experience of hospice care was when my Dad was admitted to his local hospice in Blackpool during his battle with oesophageal cancer. Although he was discharged to spend his final days at home where he wanted to be, we witnessed the exceptional care provided by hospices during his short stay.
Having lived in Halifax my whole life, I then chose to support my local hospice, Overgate, to ensure this wonderful care was available to my community. As a local businessman, I have chosen to support the hospice through my business, initially signing up to their corporate membership scheme and paying £10 per month. Since then we have been involved in so much, from sponsoring many events on the Overgate calendar, to marshalling at the Midnight Walk and attending the Sporting Dinner – you name it, we’ve done it! It is the perfect opportunity for my business to contribute positively to the community in which we work.
In 2017, I joined another local charity, The Whiteknights Yorkshire Blood Bikes, as a volunteer rider. The Whiteknights are made up of a team of volunteers who ride ‘Blood Bikes’, helping to transport vital medical samples from different sites across the region. In this role I am a regular visitor to the Hospice, helping to transport everything from Covid testing kits, to blood samples and urgent medication. This provides another chance for me to see the incredible work the Hospice does.
As the years have gone on, I’ve known people who have benefitted from the care of Overgate and I am proud to continue to support this work into the future.
