I first started volunteering for Overgate in 1990, almost 20 years ago (a fact I sometimes struggle to believe!). After volunteering in the Elland Charity Shop for a year I was asked to take on the role of volunteer Receptionist at the Hospice, and I am still here today! My years as a telephonist served me well as the role includes answering the main telephone as well as greeting staff and visitors and managing the reception shop.

One of my favourite things about volunteering is meeting people from all walks of life. No two days are the same and over the years I have made some fantastic friends. I get the pleasure of meeting and working with lots of lovely people, and in return I try my best to be as kind, caring and helpful as I can be.

A lot of people don’t know what to expect when they first come to the Hospice and it’s so important that they are made to feel at ease. For end of life care Overgate is the best place for anyone to come. We’re lucky to have the Hospice in our community and I am proud to be a part of their story.
