On Friday 9th July 2021, four Overgate Hospice supporters are taking on an epic challenge. Ryan Dunbar, Martin Robinson, Joe Sparkie and James Manhertz will be embarking on a challenge to cycle from Overgate Hospice in Elland to Edinburgh Castle in Scotland. The challenge will be completed over three days and they have set themselves a fundraising target of £3000.

The challenge is in memory of Ryan’s late Grandad John who sadly passed away at the Hospice in 2015. Ryan, joined by his three close friends, wanted to start fundraising as a tribute to John and they decided this challenge would be the perfect way to thank us for the care we provided.

John Dunbar, or Jock as he was affectionately known by his friends, was born and raised in Edinburgh before joining the army as a youth. He met Sheila in a bar in Huddersfield and two weeks later they were married. They had five children together and have 27 Grandchildren and 26 Great-grandchildren!

Ryan said; “My Grandad was at Overgate for a short time, but in that time they made him feel at peace in his final moments and myself and family are very grateful for that and by taking on this challenge to raise money, it is our way of saying thank you. I am sure my Grandad would be very proud of us and I can’t wait to get started. ”

Martin says, “I am really up for this challenge, I cannot wait. I hope we raise lots of money for a great and worthy cause.”

Rachel Lumb, Fundraiser at the Hospice said; “This is an amazing challenge and we are so grateful to Ryan, Martin, Joe and James for taking it on and for raising money for the Hospice. The support from our local community never ceases to amaze me and it makes me so proud to be a part of it all.”
