Having been postponed for two years due to the pandemic, we saw the return of our annual Sporting Dinner on Friday 7th January at The Venue, Barkisland. We welcomed over 250 guests who enjoyed a three-course meal, followed by an after-dinner talk from ex-footballer John Barnes (MBE), who is also famed for his rapping part on the iconic World Cup song ‘World in Motion’. Comedian Austin Knight had the room bursting with laughter while Billy Wheadon, as compere, ensured the evening ran smoothly.

Diners were eager to be the top bidder during a best bids auction as well hoping to be the last ones standing in a unique reverse auction. Adding to the auction items, John Barnes also generously contributed a football hospitality package, bringing the final total raised on the evening to an incredible £46,000!
John Barnes remarked ‘It’s been an absolute pleasure to be here to support Overgate this evening, the care that they provide is crucial and the amount raised tonight will make an enormous difference to Overgate’s patients and their families.

Michelle Wood, Event Fundraiser said; ‘The atmosphere tonight has been wonderful and we are yet again so overwhelmed and humbled at the incredible generosity and support shown for the Hospice. We are extremely lucky that the event has been sponsored by a number of local businesses and we would like to say a huge thank you to them and everyone who donated an auction item for the event.

Over the last 15 years, The Sporting Dinner has raised in the region of £400,000 to provide end-of-life care to the people of Calderdale.
