Over recent months, the Hospice’s Estates Team has been conducting a conditions report on the main Hospice buildings. This report identified a number of urgent issues. These issues include the existing boiler in the Inpatient Unit no longer being fit for purpose, causing water temperature to be erratic whilst caring for patients. This is boiler issue is causing a risk to patient safety which we can manage in the very short term only. Our Estates Team has looked at all options to rectify this issue however, it is now essential to replace the boiler.

In the interests of safety, this work needs to be carried out as soon as possible.  This work will mean that there will be no water supply to the Inpatient Unit for at least a week. After careful consideration of all options, and with patient safety and experience at the heart of our decision, it is necessary to relocate Overgate’s Inpatient Unit services for a period of 12 days in order to carry out this vital work. The Inpatient Unit will close by 5pm on Wednesday 17th August and reopen on the morning of Tuesday 30th August.

The very positive news is that we have been working closely with our local partners to identify a solution which provides continuity of care for our community. During this closure, Overgate will continue to provide inpatient services on a private ward at Calderdale Retreat Care Home in Greetland, just a short drive from Overgate.

All existing patients will be transferred to this ward and remain in Overgate’s care as normal. All care provided on this private ward will be by Overgate’s nurses, doctors, and our patient and family support team. Our multidisciplinary team are working closely with our patients and their families to limit the impact of this change.

Our Day Hospice sessions, and other support services running from the Hospice building, will be unaffected and will continue to run as normal.
