Earlier this summer a group of four men from Calderdale decided to take on a challenge like no other. Martin Bradley, Ross Perkins, Jamie Bradley, and Rob White set out to walk Alfred Wainwright’s Coast to Coast route starting in St. Bees, Cumbria and arriving ten days later in Robin Hood’s Bay, North Yorkshire. Along the way they passed through three national parks - The Lake District, The Yorkshire Dales and The North York Moors. The challenge saw them travel 190 miles across some of the most beautiful but challenging terrain that England has to offer, complete with some very steep climbs and difficult descents! Part of the challenge was to carry everything they needed, including clothing, food, water, and accommodation as they decided to camp each night.

Martin Bradley said; ‘Overgate Hospice looked after my Grandma before she passed away (some 18 years ago), so we did this challenge both in memory of her and to raise some money for the Hospice who do an absolutely wonderful job and play a really important part in end-of-life care for people and their families. Even being 18 years ago I vividly remember the day I visited the hospice to see her and that is the last time I saw her, but thanks to the hospice it’s a good memory. Her name was Hazel, she lived most of her life on Dean Lane in Sowerby.

Their initial fundraising target was £500 but they have already raised an incredible £1,350 with sponsorship still coming in!

Martin went on to say ‘Firstly and most importantly I want to thank Overgate for the amazing work they do, and also all the good people who have donated to our Just Giving page. All the support we’ve received is so humbling, way beyond anything we expected, and we are all so grateful to everyone. The Coast to Coast walk is just about the toughest challenge I’ve ever done, and that’s including trekking to Everest Base Camp in 2012 and walking Hadrian’s Wall in 2016!

Rachel Lumb, Challenge and Events Fundraiser said ‘We can’t thank Martin, Jamie, Ross and Rob enough for completing this amazing challenge and raising so much money for Overgate Hospice. It is only with amazing support like this that the people of Calderdale can continue to access the care they need when they need it and for that we are so grateful.

If you want to take on a challenge for Overgate Hospice we have lots to challenge you with!
