What the Social Work team does

We offer a wide range of services which we hope will address some of the difficulties encountered by patients and carers where someone has been diagnosed with a life-limiting illness.

We aim to provide emotional, practical, financial and social support for our patients as well as their families and carers.

Our role is to assess care needs in partnership with our patients, and their families and carers; while providing advice and information to enable informed choices regarding the options available.

Support for Children

The Social Work team are available to offer advice, information and resources to help adults in supporting children where someone close to them has been diagnosed with a life-limiting illness or has died.

The team have produced a booklet of resources; 'Overgate Favourites'. The book pulls together the many resources available to support children and also parents. From reviewing the support books available to websites and on DVD, the information contained will help to make those difficult conversations with children a little easier.

The Social Work team said: “Recent research tells us it is important to involve and include children where someone close to them is diagnosed with a life limiting illness. Children need time to adjust to the news just as adults do. They need to be told sensitively, but honestly, using age appropriate language and explanation. This resource book will help parents do that, and direct both the parents and children to further information when the time is right.”

The Social Work team are keen for the book to be a help to as many people as possible, so if anyone would like a copy please do not hesitate to contact Overgate Hospice on 01422 379151 or at fundraising@overgatehospice.nhs.uk
