On Friday 9th June, the staff at Overgate Hospice were very proud to receive the Small Employer of the Year Award at the University of Huddersfield Apprenticeship Awards 2023, while our very own Nursing Associate, Rebecca Nolan, won the Level 6 Apprentice of the Year Award.

The award recognises Overgate as an outstanding employer which supports their employees and apprentices to reach their potential. Rebecca came to Overgate in 2020 as Nursing Associate and was then encouraged by the Hospice to complete her Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeship in 2022. Overgate will welcome Rebecca back in December 2023 as a Staff Nurse.

Marie Sullivan, Overgate’s Deputy Director of Clinical Services, and Kim Szyczak, Ward Manager on Overgate’s Inpatient Unit, collected the award on behalf of the Hospice. Marie Sullivan said about their proud moment, “We are very proud to have been awarded the Small Employer of the Year Award by the University of Huddersfield. We strive to create a working environment which encourages people to strive for their goals and supports all staff to be the best they can be.

“It has been our pleasure and our honour to have welcomed Becky into the team as our Nursing Associate and to watch her continue to grow. We are excited to welcome her back as a Staff Nurse and to be a part of her blossoming career in nursing. Rebecca is a huge asset to Overgate and, as a Staff Nurse, will care for people across Calderdale with the kindness, compassion, and understanding that they deserve.”
Rebecca said, “I nominated the Hospice for the Small Employer of the Year Award for their unwavering support and encouragement of myself and everyone who works there. I did not expect to then receive the Level 6 Apprentice of the Year after being nominated by Overgate too! It was an honour to receive the award and I will display it very proudly. I can’t wait to return to the Hospice in December to start my new career as a Registered Nurse.”

The Apprenticeship Awards recognises employers who have provided incredible support and skills development opportunities for their apprentices. Each nomination is anonymised before being judged by the awards panel so that the process is fair and empirical.
